About The Soap Farmer

Hi, I’m Adele.

In 2008, I embarked on an unexpected adventure, leaving behind my South African roots to explore the captivating beauty of New Zealand. Little did I know that this decision would shape the next few years of my life and turn me into a proud New Zealand Citizen. Inspired by tradition and the purity of nature, it is here, amidst the happy whirlwind of my life as a full-time working mum, that my newfound passion emerged: soap making.

I am honoured to continue the legacy of Boerseep. Every bar of soap carries with it a piece of my heritage and a commitment to quality, sustainability, and the well-being of those who use it.

Preserving a Heritage in Soap

Boerseep, a name resonating with tradition, resilience, and the rustic essence of South Africa’s past, holds a special place in its cultural tapestry. This iconic soap, deeply rooted in the history of the Afrikaner people and rural life, embodies the spirit of resourcefulness and ingenuity that characterised the early settlers of the region.

Origins and History

The term Boerseep, translating to Farmer’s Soap in Afrikaans, provides a glimpse into its close association with the farming communities of South Africa. Its origins can be traced back to the 17th century when Dutch and other settlers migrated from the Cape Colony into the interior of modern South Africa. Faced with the challenge of limited access to imported goods, these pioneers turned to their surroundings, crafting their own cleaning solutions and giving birth to what we now know as Boerseep.

Utility and Uses

Boerseep proved to be a versatile commodity in the daily lives of early South African settlers. Its robust cleansing properties made it suitable for a myriad of tasks, including laundry, dishwashing, and general household cleaning.

Beyond its utility in domestic chores, Boerseep also served as a bathing and skincare solution, owing to its gentle but effective formulation. Its ability to tackle stubborn dirt and grease yet be gentle on the skin while treating various skin conditions, made it indispensable in rural settings where access to commercial cleaning products was limited.

Ingredients and Production

Boerseep was traditionally crafted using a simple yet effective combination of locally available ingredients. Animal fats, often sourced from leftover mutton or beef fat, were combined with lye derived from the ashes of indigenous hardwood trees like Spekboom or Karee. The process involved rendering the fats, creating a lye solution, and meticulously mixing the components to initiate saponification, resulting in the formation of solid soap bars.

Making Boerseep is not merely a process; it’s a labour of love, steeped in tradition and meticulous attention to detail. The process involves a delicate balance of timing, temperature control, and precise ratios of ingredients. Stirring the mixture by hand until it reaches the desired creamy consistency is not only a physical endeavour, but also a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship involved in preserving this time-honoured tradition.

Cultural Significance and Legacy

The cultural significance of Boerseep extends far beyond its practical applications. It symbolises the resourcefulness, self-reliance, and resilience of the early South African settlers who crafted it. Passed down through generations, the tradition of making Boerseep has been preserved within some families, each with their own cherished recipes and methods. It serves as a reminder of how necessity and innovation converged to create a practical and enduring solution for cleanliness and hygiene.

Despite the proliferation of modern commercially produced soaps, Boerseep remains a revered cultural icon, cherished for its historical significance and connection to South Africa’s rural heritage. Its simplicity, effectiveness, and deep-rooted cultural resonance continue to captivate those who value tradition and a tangible connection to the past.
